Set within a supportive, non-threatening environment, counseling encourages the participant -- adult, child, couple or family -- to share and explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors that may be of concern to them.
Bringing those concerns out in the open with a non-judgmental therapist is the first step to heal and to increase feelings of well-being.  Learning to communicate in a clear and direct manner can diminish misunderstandings, raise feelings of self-esteem, and enhance closeness and intimacy. For children, having the tools to communicate non-verbally (through art, toys, and role-play) opens their family to new understanding and joy.
